The Valency of Data: The Necessity of a Moral Compass in AI
During the initial phase of the Big Data revolution, the prevailing industry belief was that increased data volume inherently led to better outcomes. Organizations constructed extensive data repositories, operating under the assumption that providing sufficient information to neural networks would yield objective truths. Data was regarded as a neutral resource to be collected, processed, and utilized.
In 2026, the landscape has become more complex. Data is not a neutral commodity; it is a historical artifact that embodies the biases, values, and emotional context of its creators. In physics, valence refers to an atom’s capacity to combine with others based on its outer electrons. In psychology, valence denotes the intrinsic attractiveness or aversiveness of an event.
Within Artificial Intelligence, Data Valence refers to the inherent ethical and emotional charge present in each data point. If organizations continue to evaluate AI strategies solely by data volume and processing speed, while disregarding valence, they risk constructing systems that merely replicate and amplify existing human biases.
The Illusion of Neutrality
A pervasive misconception in contemporary enterprise technology is the belief that data is inherently objective. For example, spreadsheets of customer churn rates or databases of hiring history are often perceived as factual. The ethical quality of an AI system is directly influenced by the integrity of those who curate its training data.

For example, a global logistics company deployed a highly efficient AI system to manage warehouse staffing, utilizing five years of performance data. Within six months, the AI began systematically assigning fewer shifts to employees residing in a particular zip code.
Superficially, the AI appeared successful, having identified a pattern of reduced productivity. However, the affected zip code had experienced significant road construction two years earlier, resulting in temporary delays. The AI lacked awareness of this context and instead responded to the negative valence present in the data. By prioritizing data volume over valence, the company nearly faced a class-action lawsuit and experienced substantial loss of experienced personnel.
